Round 2 Recap

It was certainly a big day at Carrum Downs Rec Reserve on Saturday with all four football sides playing at home against a variety of opponents.

The day kicked off with the Thirds taking on Hallam. Our boys were strong from the outset and put on a relentless display, running out winners by 146 points. Sean Murnane took best on ground honours, playing a dominant role in the midfield and booting four goals.

The under 19s then faced off against Carrum-Patterson Lakes. It was a competitive game for the most part, but it was CPL's seven-goal first quarter that was the difference in the end. CPL ended the game with a 31-point victory. Captain, Josh Scrivano, was best on ground.

The reserves went two wins from two games when they defeated the recently relegated, Heatherton. 41 points was the difference in the end, however the reserves will rue their inaccuracy in front of goal, kicking 7.13 for the afternoon. Faisal Payenda was solid down back and was deserving of the best on ground award.

The day came to a close with the seniors notching up their first win of the season. Signs against Oakleigh Districts were solid in round 1, but it started to come toegther against Heatherton. Our players put on a high-intensity performance and started to revive the unrelenting pressure game that we grew to love in 2014. Our seniors came away with a well-deserved 72-point win. It was a good day for our captains, with Aaron Pacey taking best on ground honours with five goals.

Unfortunately on the netball front, both sides were defeated at the weekend. Both sides were competitive which is extremely promising. The A side went down to Heatherton by a single point, while the B side lost to Dandenong by 20.

Round 3 will see all of our football sides playing away for the first time this season. The seniors, reserves and thirds will all take on Doveton Eagles at Power Reserve, while the under 19s will take on Carrum-Patterson Lakes again, this time at Roy Dore Reserve.

The netball girls are both on at 12:00pm again at Dingley Netball Courts. The A side take on Springvale Districts and the B side will match up against St Kilda City.

Round 1 Recap

The Skye Football Club descended on Princes Hwy Reserve last Saturday to take on Oakleigh Districts. But not before the Thirds had their first game at home against Sandown.

The thirds looked strong in what started as a competitive clash. The cobwebs were soon brushed away and the team were able to recapture their finals form from 2014. Unfortunately for Sandown, several of their players retired from game, allowing our boys to start the year with a 122-point victory.

The Under 19s found the going a little tougher over at Princes Hwy Reserve when they took on newcomers, Oakleigh Districts. Our boys were competitive early, but the sheer size and strength of the Oakleigh Dist. kids was the difference in the end. The 19s guys fought hard but will certainly need to put in some hard yards on the training track this week in the lead up to the game against Carrum-Patterson Lakes this week. Oakleigh Districts eventually ran out 132-point winners.

The Reserves were quick to put the disappointment of the 2014 grand final behind them with a hard-fought win over Oakleigh Districts also played at Princes Hwy Reserve. Oakleigh Dist. came back late in the game, but our boys did enough to come away with a 12-point win.

The Seniors knew they were in for a tough match against Oakleigh Districts from the moment the fixture was announced. The boys had been preparing well and were ready for the challenge. Oakleigh Dist. came out firing and had achieved a three-goal lead at the first break. This lead was extended going into half time before our boys started to peg them back in the second half. Playing some inspired footy, the team were able to get iwthin a point in the final quarter before Oakleigh Dist. sealed the game with a late goal. Oakleigh Districts took the points with an 8-point win.

In a sensational start for the netballers, both teams were able to get the points at Dingley Netball Complex on Saturday. Both team played at midday. Netball A took on Bentleigh, while Netball B played Chelsea Heights. The Netball A girls defeated Bentleigh 21-26 and Netball B defeated Chelsea Heights 17-21.

No More SFL

Skye Football & Netball Club will no longer be associated with the Southern Football League.

Our club will now be a member of the Southern Football Netball League.

Since the introduction of the netball competition, the league has experienced massive growth and seen a shift in diversity. From seven teams and one division in its first season of competition, the netball now runs 51 teams across six divisions. It is a great success story.

League members voted on the name change at a recent special general meeting for Presidents and Secretaries.

With our club entering two teams this season, we feel very much a part of this growth and are very proud of our contribution.

Under 19s, Thirds & Netball Fixtures Released

The SFL has released the under 19s and third-grade fixtures for 2015 as well as the first three grading rounds for netball.

Skye will feature in both the under 19s and the thirds, as well as having two teams representing the club in the netball competition.

Round 1 will see the seniors, reserves and under 19s travel to Princes Hwy Reserve to take on Oakleigh Districts, while the thirds will begin their campaign at home against Sandown.

The netball girls will both start their season at 12pm and will be taking on Bentleigh (Div 4) and Chelsea Heights (Div 6). The netball competition will again be held at Rohan Rd Netball Complex in Dingley.

Over the season, we have seven rounds where all four football sides play at home together. That is seven out of nine home games which is a great result for the club. It should be a big year for the Bombers!

2015 CLUB LEADERS (L to R): Dean Flynn, Cal Lester, Luke Broomhall, Heath Burridge, Brent Nanopoulos, Aaron Pacey, Aaron Harper, Elliot Williams, Josh Scrivano, Nick Webb, Scott Thorne and Paul Follett.

Members of the club descended on the Sands Hotel on Saturday night for the informal Season Launch.

The turn out was fantastic. There were many new faces mixing in with the existing members over a bistro meal and drinks. It was a relaxed atmosphere and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves.

Once everyone was fed, the coaches took the floor and announced their captains and leadership groups for the 2015 season.

Josh Scrivano (right) and Luke Broomhall (left) will lead the Under 19s in 2015.

Newly appointed under 19s coach, Adam Lagerewskij, spoke first and stated his excitement about taking on the role and how much he was looking forward to working with the clubs young talent. Lagerewskij then appointed Josh Scrivano as captain, with Luke Broomhall as his second-in-charge. Both Josh and Luke have made their mark as young leaders over the preseason and everyone at Skye looks forward to seeing them develop these skills as the year progresses.

THIRDS LEADERSHIP (L to R): Heath Burridge (Co-Captain), Elliot Williams (Co-Captain), Dean Flynn (Vice-Captain) and Paul Follett (Vice-Captain).

Thirds coach, Chris Rodrigues, then announced his leadership team for the season. Experienced ruck/forward Heath Burridge and the ever-passionate Elliot Williams were announced as co-captains. Paul Follett and Dean Flynn will support them.

RESERVES LEADERS (L to R): Cal Lester (Leadership), Nick Webb (Vice-Captain), Brent Nanopoulos (Captain), Scott Thorne (Leadership).

Chris Smith was proud to announce his good friend and passionate clubman, Brent Nanopoulos, as captain of the reserves team. Ruckman Nick Webb was announced as vice-captain with Scott Thorne and Cal Lester as leadership support.

The floor then went to second-year senior coach, Ben Walker to present his leadership team for 2015. There were no suprised faces when Aaron Pacey was handed the captaincy for the sixth straight year. Pacey's leadership skills have developed rapidly since first being appointed in 2010. He lead the seniors to a grand final berth in 2014 and will be working hard to get his team there and go one better in 2015. Veteran Marty Watts and hard-working tagger Aaron Harper will be the senior vice-captains.

SENIOR LEADERS (L to R): Aaron Pacey (Captain), Aaron Harper (Vice-Captain). ABSENT: Marty Watts (Vice-Captain).

The club is very proud of it's leaders and look forward to seeing what they can achieve this season. Congratulations to everyone included in this group for 2015.

Captain's Day Out

Could the skip have done any better......?

Aaron Pacey was front and centre with the club captains at the 2015 AFL Season Launch held this morning at Etihad Stadium.

The league was impressed with Aaron Pacey's endeavour.

Our senior captain of the last five years made the trip to Etihad stadium as our club representative to be involved in a nation-wide launch campaign were every football club from around the country were invited to be involved and mix it with the AFL leaders. Aaron was also fortunate enough to snare a selfie with his idol, Richmond captain, Trent Cotchin.

Aaron Pacey posing with his idol, Richmond captain Trent Cothin.

Forever hardworking, Aaron has put the disappointment of the 2014 grand final loss behind him to put in what might perhaps be his best preseason and is a strong chance to retain the captaincy in 2015 when it is announced this Saturday at the Sands Hotel.

You may be aware that a government grant for full ground lighting at Wedge Rd has been approved. It is now up to us to fundraise for our contribution to the project. This opportunity won't come around again.

This is a fantastic result for our players who will finally get the chance to train on their own home ground under lights and also for the future of sport in the area.

This has been a huge goal for the club over the past few years and we have our chance to make it happen. So please dig deep and give generously to the LIGHT UP THE SKYE campaign.
