The SFNL has experienced rapid growth in a short time. The netball competition now runs across six divisions. As a result, keeping up with umpire demands has been a challenge. Therefore, the league are now looking to clubs to spread the word and aid in recruiting.

Umpires in the SFNL are only required to travel to the Springvale Netball Association in Dingley (MAP) on a Saturday and can earn up to around $35 per game. Not bad at all for 50 minutes work. 

​They are looking for badged umpires or anyone who is looking to try it for the first time. They will even arrange to put you through the training.

Bogan Bingo is coming to the Hangar!

This is sure to be an excellent night. The Bogan Bingo team will be bringing their fantastic show to our club rooms for all of our members to enjoy.

It was a beautiful sunny day at the Hangar on Saturday which presented perfect conditions for football.

The day began with the thirds taking on Doveton Eagles in the morning. Our guys put together four quarters of solid football to run out convincing winners. The final margin was 236 points. Best-on-ground honours went to co-captain, Heath Burridge. Troy Docherty kicked seven goals, while Brad Dyer finished with six majors.

It was then up to the reserves to continue their good form against Caulfield. Our boys controlled the game from the beginning and the result was never in doubt. We were able to increase the lead at every change and eventually ran out 85-point winners. Michael Lindley was best-on-ground. Mathew Poore added to his strong season tally with six goals. 

The seniors were faced with a tough challenge. Caulfield have been tipped by many to be a strong contender in 2015. The scores were level with two goals each at quarter time before the Bears were able to earn a 13-point lead at the main break. It was a tight battle in the second half which see-sawed the way of Caulfield by the time the final siren went. Caulfield finished the game with a 7-point win. Coach Ben Walker was best-on-ground, with Travis Kitchin kicking three goals.

The under 19s travelled to Jack Barker oval to face Cheltenham on their home deck. Expectations were high and our guys were due for a solid game. Unfortunately, things did not go our way and our guys couldn't get on top at all. Cheltenham were too good and our guys were defeated by 41 points.

Over at the netball complex, our girls had a couple of challenging games. The A-side went down to Dingley 43-22, while the B-side were defeated by Cheltenham 58-33. The girls continue to work hard on the track and we expect this to pay off in the coming weeks.

This coming weekend, all sides will be playing away. The seniors, reserves and under 19s will travel to Hampton to take on the Hammers while the thirds make the trek to South Yarra. Both netball sides will of course be at the netball complex in Dingley and they will face Lyndale (A-side) and Mount Waverley (B-side).

It is important that we all get behind our teams and support them over the line. We are a third of the way through the season so we want to get all of our teams onto a winning run. We look forward to seeing you there this Saturday! 

We won't know until Thursday, but if young Travis Kitchin pulls on the Skye jumper this weekend, it will be his 100th club game.

This is a fantastic achievement for a player who began in our under 19s and has worked his way into the senior side. Travis has been a much-loved character around the club and has been a part of great success. He was a member of our reserves 2013 premiership side as well as playing in our senior 2014 grand final team.

Of course these days Travis is further developing his game as a part of the Frankston Dolphins squad, having featured in a few reserves games early this season. We are very proud of the kid and hope that he can continue to work hard and succeed at that level. Otherwise, we are more than happy to have him in our team!

Round 5 was always going to be a big test. It was the greatest unknown. How would we fare against a good team who is new to the competition?

Our three senior sides travelled to Keysborough Reserve to take on the league newcomers. The day began at 9:45am with the thirds. After a fast start by the Skye lads, Keysborough kicked their first and looked like they may go the distance. Skye quickly put an end to that notion, allowing Keysborough only one solitary point for the remainder of the game. The thirds eventually ran out 169-point winners. Captain Heath Burridge was named best-on-ground in a dominating performance at centre half back.

The reserves then took to the park. Not much can be said aside from mentioning the ferocity of the contest and that the reserves continued their unbeaten run. It was another impressive win for the reserves, eventually getting the points in a 60-point win. Coach Chris Smith was best-on-ground.

Then came the big one. For the most part our senior boys were competitive and at times, closed the gap. Injuries to Adam Beness and Aaron Pacey left us with only two on the bench. Our boys continued to fight, but Keysborough were able to keep kicking away to eventually run out 27-point winners. Marty Watts was best-on-ground in what was a tough slog for the midfield group. 

The under 19s faced some tough opposition in St Kilda City and the result showed with our boys going down by 102 points. Our boys fought hard as always but the bigger bodies of the Saints was too much to overcome. Brett Dawson led the way being named best-on-ground.

Back at the netball complex, the B-side grabbed their first victory in a 4-point win over Murrumbeena. The A-side weren't so fortunate, going down to St Kilda City by 3-points.

This weekend promises to be another big one with three games at home. The seniors and reserves face Caulfield, while the thirds take on Doveton Eagles. The under 19s travel to Jack Barker Oval to take on Cheltenham. 

At the netball complex, the A-side face a tough task against Dingley, while the B-side will face Cheltenham.

Club founder and current Vice President, Steve McCann, was last week's Local Footy Hero on the Local Footy Show on Channel 31.

Steve's work in not only getting the club up and running, but also in it's growth has been unmatched and it is great to see him receive this on-air time as recognition.

The Skye Football & Netball Club certainly appreciates everything that Steve has done and everything that he continues to do.

The SFNL has nominated Jordan Grubb as it's Leader Shooting Star for round 4.

Jordan is in his first season with the Skye FC and has been in consistent form to start the year. Jordan is linking up with the midfield nicely which is enabling us to bring the ball into the forward 50 at pace, heaping pressure on opposing backlines. Jordan has a high work rate and is always presenting at the contests.

What a day at the Hangar! For the second time this season, we had four football sides claim victory.

Round 4 started at 8:45am with the thirds taking on second-placed South Yarra. Our boys are stringing together some very impressive performances and were able to pick South Yarra apart in every quarter. The thirds remain on top of the ladder undefeated after coming away with a 115-point win. Cory Baines was best on ground with a sensational running game on the wing.

Coming off their first win last week, the under 19s were brimming with confidence. With some handy inclusions in the side, that confidence was justified. East Brighton got out to a handy lead early and looked to have a significant edge. To their credit, the young fellas clawed their way back and stole victory in the last quarter. Tyson Ross was sensational, while newbie Caleb Ellis provided some extra height in the team. Brandon Black was best on ground in his second game back.

What more can you say about the reserves performances so far. The boys seem very determined to make amends for the disappointing end to 2014 and our 2015 opponents are the unfortunate victims. Chris Smith has his charges well-drilled and disciplined. This was evident in their ability to hold Murrumbeena to a solitary goal while our boys were able to kick 12 of their own. The hard work is far from over but you get a sense that the reserves are ready for any challenge. A 78-point win against the Lions was a great achievement.Reining best and fairest winner, Sot Solomonidis was best on ground, getting plenty of the ball and finding lots of space throughout the day.

The sensational run continued into the seniors game with our first 18 also taking on Murrumbeena. This game was always going to be a challenge and it was for the first three quarters. The game looked like it could've gone either way, but the Skye boys were able to find that little bit extra to run out comfortable winners by 34 points. Young gun Jordan Thomas was best on ground.

Over at the netball complex, the A-side registered a great win against Keysborough. The B-side are still searching for that first win, going down to Dandenong.

The Skye Football & Netball Club is currently participating in its 10th season in competition.

To celebrate, we will be hosting a mid-season 10-Year Anniversary Ball on June 27th at the Sandhurst Club. Following the success of our first mid-year ball in 2014, we felt that this would be the perfect occassion to invite all current and past members of the club along and recognise our achievements in that time.

We will also take the opportunity to announce our Team of the Decade. This is an important milestone for the club and we look forward to recognising those who have made a significant contribution on the field.

Tickets are $75.00 (beer, wine, softdrink and finger food provided). The dress-code is formal and there will be plenty of opportunities to catch up with those who you may not have seen for some time and those who are currently at the club.

All four football sides came away with the four points for the first time this season.

It was a great day that started with the thirds game at Power Reserve against Doveton Eagles. History suggested that our boys should have controlled the game and come away with a convincing win and that was precisely how it played out. The Doveton boys produced some competitive patches, but in the end our thirds guys were too strong and ran out 195-point winners. Jarryd Karadeas was best on ground getting plenty of touches and kicking four goals.

Meanwhile, over at Roy Dore Reserve in Carrum, the under 19s boys were off to a flying start in their re-match against last week's opponent, Carrum-Patterson Lakes. A four goal to none first term helped set our boys up. CPL did well to peg the lead back to two goals at the last change, but the composure on display in the final term allowed our boys to finish up 26-point winners. Brendan Weighell was best on ground in the first under 19s win for the season.

Back at Power Reserve, the reserves took to the field and put in a performance was reminiscent of their best in 2014. Chris Smith fired his team up before the first bounce and the team never looked back. Matt Poore was sensational up forward, kicking 14 goals, while Nick Webb and Mick Lindley controlled the midfield. The reserves remain undefeated after three rounds with a convincing 173-point win.

As the final note of the Last Post rang out, the seniors huddled for final instructions before taking their positions. Doveton had been competitive in the opening few round so we knew we wer ein for a tough battle. Doveton opened the scoring with a quick goal, but the game was very much in our control from then on. The tackling pressure was relentless around the ball. Young forward, Ryan McConville is showing signs of his abilities kicking six majors for the day. Best on ground honours went to Adam Beness who was excellent in the 69-point victory.

Results from other games put our seniors in second place on the ladder after three rounds.

Over at Dingley Netball Courts, netballA and B teams unfortunately went down to Springvale Districts and St Kilda City respectively. The A side lost 38-30, while the B side lost 46-17. The signs are still good with re-grading taking place this week. We expect both teams to remain in their current divisions.

With all sides going strong we expect a big turnout at Carrum Downs Rec Reserve this Saturday when all four football teams return to play home games in round 4. It will be a sensational day with the seniors and reserves taking on Murrumbeena, the under 19s battling newcomers East Brighton and the thirds opening preceedings against South Yarra.
